splash - an artists' book

It appears that I have forgotten to share my January entry for the #areyoubookenough artists’ book challenge here, and you get two new posts today!

Last month the @areyoubookenough bookbinding community challenge had the theme 'in between' and I think we had a record number of entries as well as an extremely high overall level of work. I had so many ideas but in the end it was really easy to pick just one. So, French fold pages with hidden content it is. Splash - an artists' book with French folds bound in the Japanese style. The pages have perforated geometric patterns on them and vintage photos of a young girl swimming printed on the inside. There are two photos each sliced into thirds - one spread is of the sky, one of the horizon, one of the girl with waves - making six hidden spreads altogether. The printed half-cover wraps around the binding, leaving it, too, in between.

The vintage photos I used for this project are from an old album I've probably found at the Spitalfields antique market many years ago. I'd love to credit the photographer or give you more info, but unfortunately I have none. You can find a video of the book being handled here.
