mixed media monday - sharp

mixed media collage by Kaija Rantakari / paperiaarre.com

Days are brighter, warmer and clearer. The streets have now been cleaned from the grit that was laid on icy streets during the winter, making it a bit easier to breathe again. No more clouds of dust, and most delightingly, no more ice. I finished a big shop update on Saturday, so you can now find most of my recent work there (books, brooches and mixed media pieces). After reading all your suggestions once more, I finally renamed "the spool lady" as Seamstress of the Year. It wasn't a suggestion anyone made, but I wouldn't have come up with it without your ideas!

This Monday's piece had plans to become something else entirely, but once I came up with the idea of adding pins to the book cover, I knew exactly what photo should go with them. More often my ideas grow from photos, but sometimes I'm treated with the opportunity to pair photos to ideas.

As you can see above, someone writing on the back of this photo created a visible texture to the front as well. I like when I can take advantage of layers born unintentionally.

Look at Quilt, indeed.

Many holes punched, many stitches stitched. And many old pins found here and there. Still charmed by using multiples, like with the spools of thread.

Like most my mixed media work, this, too, is ready to hang - there's a linen thread going across the back.

(vintage photo, vintage book cover, vintage pins, cut up vintage text, embroidery thread, board, paper, glue, linen thread)

I just want to say once again a big thank you for all the love you have shown me lately - here in the comments, in emails and in social media (which I should probably promote more here, too, so here goes: you can find me almost daily on Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest). As someone often expertly awkward in social interaction I really, really appreciate everything you share with me.

Much love,
Kaija
